David Summerfield is a Senior Executive Partner and Head of Studio since 2008. From his first project, the North Greenwich Interchange in London, to the McLaren Technology Centre, DY Patil University Centre of Excellence in Mumbai, Transamerica Pyramid Center in San Francisco, and Apple Park in Cupertino, his career has been marked by projects that demonstrate the successful integration of architecture, engineering and interiors. Throughout his career, David has also championed the role of craft and the successful communication of design, whether through models or hand-drawn sketches. Within the Partnership Board, he oversees the Design Communications team, often encouraging the use of new drawing and rendering techniques, and highlighting the tactile, hands-on aspects of the practice’s work. David maintains an emphasis on teamwork – with his commitment to building creative relationships extending internationally. He has been instrumental in establishing Foster + Partners’ offices in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Korea and Miami. Whether collaborating on large-scale projects or refining the details of furniture design, as with the Cordoba Chair, he remains focused on creating buildings and spaces that unite aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility.

I’m always intrigued by going to a different place, trying to understand the culture and then trying to integrate the capabilities that we have here. Bringing what we do, but also drawing out, from the countries we visit, the culture, and not rubber-stamping an aesthetic or architectural style wherever we go. That's what gets me out of bed in the morning.
